WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (3 Sept., 2018) – After fighting for positions all the way to the finish line, Ferrari factory driver Toni Vilander clinched the 2018 Pirelli World Challenge combined GT championship with a run to fourth place at Watkins Glen International on Saturday.Vilander had to race his way forward with the No. 61 R. Ferri Motorsport Ferrari of Ontario, Toronto and Alberta/Zekelman Industries Ferrari 488 GT3 to lock in the points needed to secure the championship on Saturday. After running sixth for the opening 25-minutes, Vilander  gained a pair of positions when a pair of competitors pitted.  Vilander then moved to fourth position with just three minutes remaining in the race, and pushed his pursuit for third the the final moments of the event, coming up just 0.360 seconds short at the checkered flag to finish fourth.Entering the race with a 29-point lead in the GT Sprint and GT SprintX combined standings, the result gave Vilander the points he needed to confirm another World Challenge championship on the season with the combined GT title.Sunday’s race saw Vilander once again fight to fourth at the finish, leaving him just eight points shy of claiming the sprint GT championship.

“I said on the radio after the race, ‘Guys, we won four championships, let’s be happy,’” Vilander said. “It’s been a great year overall.”

“We had a bad start – the (lap one) incident caused a bit of a problem,” said team owner Remo Ferri. “We didn’t qualify well, and I think that’s the key. But we still won four championships. We had a great year, a great team, great car, great driver, it’s a great sport for everybody. We put a lot of effort into this, a lot of work with long hours, and a lot of money, but in the end, it’s great to win championships.”

Altogether, R.Ferri Motorsport won 4 major championships in the 2018 World Challenge season.
